The "Old Church Hall" dates back to the time when Services
were held in the Schoolroom at the "top of the lane" on Sunday evenings.
The Rev. Bryant Wonnacott arrived here in 1895,
and a move was made to procure a large iron Church. The large hearted Vicar of Enfield
(the late Prebendary Hodson) who took a warm interest in the growing spiritual life of the
whole district, gave a valuable piece of glebe land as a site for the iron building and
for the future church. With the help of the Bishop of London's Fund the temporary church
was erected at a cost of £400, and this building was dedicated by the late Venerable
Archdeacon Thornton on February 1st 1896.
On November 4th, 1899, Lord Salisbury (then
Viscount Cranbourne) laid the Foundation Stone of the permanent church, the service being
conducted by the late Bishop Creighton. When the new church was opened the old iron
building was used as the Parish Hall. Having served the Parish for approximately 100 years
it is to be replaced by the new community centre. The "Old Church Hall" closed
for business on 21st JUNE 1999.
